Gaza: Every child has a right to an education – 15 November 2024
“We were living a good life. I wish the war would end so I could go back home and continue reading and studying.” – Laith, ten
Laith: “I’m displaced from the north to the south. I’ve benefited from school – now I can read and write”
Children in Gaza continue to be exposed to conflict, destruction and displacement. With devastating consequences for children and families, 85% of all Gaza’s schools have been damaged or destroyed since the beginning of the war, with many serving as shelters for those who have lost their homes. To respond to this situation, UNICEF and its partners have established 39 Temporary Learning Spaces serving over 12,400 students to help uphold their right to education. In addition, fun activities, emergency learning kits, and mental health and social support are being offered to children, young people, caregivers and teachers in shelters. UNICEF is calling for a ceasefire, as well as the release of all hostages currently held in Gaza, and humanitarian access to reach children.
