Arrest warrant issued for Israel prime minister – 22 November 2024
Arrest warrants have been issued for Israel’s prime minister, his former defence minister and the military commander of Hamas, the group that runs Gaza.
An arrest warrant is an order issued by a judge, in this case from those at the International Criminal Court, (ICC), which grants permission for arrests and investigations to be carried out.
The ICC believes the three are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The Israeli prime minister is Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence secretary is Yoav Gallant. Mohammed Deif is in charge of the military wing of Hamas, which started the war when it launched a surprise attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Hamas is classed as a terrorist group by the UK, US and many other countries.
Deif has been accused of being responsible for taking hostages, murder, cruel treatment, torture and horrific assaults on women. Netanyahu and Gallant have been accused of being responsible for murder and deliberately starving civilians.
